In 1996, North Carolina hosted the Special Olympics, kicking off the games with an electrifying opening ceremony honoring over 3,000 special athletes on the field at Carter Finley Stadium in Raleigh. The excitement and pure joy on the faces of the athletes was something I will always remember.
Working out of a small production truck, we produced two back-to-back live broadcasts: a 60 minute show for the local CBS affiliate and a two hour show for state-wide public television. The break between broadcasts was just long enough for a new producer to occupy an already-warm seat in the production truck; I stayed in the director’s seat.
